Cathodic Protection

Cathodic protection is an electrochemical technique for preventing corrosion that occurs on metallic materials in contact with aggressive environments, such as: soil, sea water, fresh water, chemicals, concrete, etc.

The corrosions that are triggered in metallic materials are of various types:
  • By leaked or stray currents
  • By electrochemical reaction with the environment
  • By geological pile
  • By galvanic pile

Cathodic protection is a technique for completely blocking corrosion on metal structures. Cathodic protection consists of circulating a direct current between an anodic earth electrode and the structure to be protected; this current causes the potential of the metal material to be lowered, thus reducing the rate of corrosion until it stops completely.

Cathodic protection is a completely non-invasive technique and is applied to metal structures already buried, without any specific intervention on the latter. A cathodic protection system consists of a direct current generator (cathodic power supply), whose negative pole is connected to the structure to be protected simply by an electric cable, while the positive pole is connected to an anode disperser made ad HOC with specific materials (Fe-Si-Cr, Titanium, etc.). The electric field generated by this circuit is sufficient to inhibit corrosion even for several km of pipeline.
